I have a lot of takeaways from my village project experience. So here are my ten main takeaways from my time working as a tutor. The first takeaway I got from the experience was how to adapt to challenging situations within my teaching. I think being able to adapt to different challenges helps me become an overall better teacher and it also helps me in real world experience outside of the classroom. I was really able to better understand adapting through my tutoring because there were so many different challenges you may not notice from an observational perspective however when you are involved within that situation you are really able to learn. My second takeaway is seeing the beginning of what it means to be an educator. When you are placed in field experience for the first time you don’t fully understand what it means to teach, but as you go on, you develop better skills and ideas of what it is to teach. As I go along in my process in the educational field, I can look back at this experience and use it to develop different skills which will help me in the future which is my third takeaway. My third takeaway from this experience is that I know how beneficial this will be for my future, having field experience helps me be comfortable within the field and be able to continue my process as an educator with things like sophomore block. My fourth takeaway is the school environment, I think when you walk into a classroom environment when you are not the student is an interesting thing to think about, I can take away from this experience that I better understand the idea of working in a school and the importance of responsibility that the tutor/teacher have within the classroom. My fifth takeaway is that you better understand how to organize lessons. For my experience I developed lesson plans every week and I think that really helps with the future and how to organize a lesson. My sixth takeaway is cooperating with people in your assigned area. I benefited a lot from working with other people and asking advice from other people on how to approach certain situations within my tutoring. My seventh takeaway from this is that applying mindfulness within my lessons benefits the student more than you realize. During my tutoring we were taught certain mindfulness techniques that help students refocus and I noticed significant improvement in my student’s learning when I put it into practice. My eighth takeaway is a growth mindset. When I applied a growth mindset in my tutoring, my student tended to be more ready to learn even though there were struggles at times when trying to teach and his attentiveness to the lesson would fade every once in a while. My ninth takeaway from this was the importance of helping these students get back up to their grade level. Many of these students struggle with basic literacy and by us being able to help improve their literacy little by little it benefits the entire school which goes to the final takeaway which is the overall importance of being able to have these opportunities to tutor. Having these individual opportunities to improve our skills helps society overall and makes us ready to adjust to the real life of an educator. By us being prepped for teaching we are able to help the education system become better and more efficient for students and teachers.
While all your insights are important, the first is, in many ways the most valuable. Research on teaching indicates that effective teachers are “adaptive experts.” That is, they thrive because they are able to adjust to the circumstances and find effective solutions that support students.
