Having a teaching philosophy is important to every teacher and every teacher has one. It is how the teacher runs their classroom and how the students participate within that environment. Every teacher has their philosophy and they can correlate in some aspects with the 5 teaching philosophies which we discussed in class. Essentialism, perennialism, progressivism, reconstructionism, and existentialism are the 5 main philosophies and my philosophy can connect to them. My philosophy is that every student should be able to expand their qualities within my classroom but also learn their passion through the course from which I teach. My classroom should be engaging and mutually student-centered and teaching centered. My philosophy mostly revolves around existentialism where students find their interests and hobbies through the course work from which I teach. My teaching style is mostly going to revolve around the idea of existentialism however I am going to have set coursework for the subject I teach. I want my students to be able to engage in the class and find the subjects engaging and be able to apply the curriculum to other classes and into life. My classroom will mostly function based on projects and lessons that require students to use the information from my lesson plan and be able to implement it into their works and be able to use their knowledge effectively. My teaching style will include notes for the students however homework will be taken up mostly by projects which I think more effectively keep the students engaged within the class. I also think my classroom should be able to invite the idea of engagement for students. I believe that all the students should work with others but also include the idea of individualism. Sometimes working in groups can be frustrating because it can restrict displaying your knowledge. I will encourage class communication while keeping the projects/homework to the individual to show off their unique skills and qualities. For my teaching, I want to keep the idea of lecture in the classroom so that students can take notes while also adding different interesting subjects that apply to class into the lesson plan. I believe my classroom will include lectures and group discussions for the most part. Project work will mostly be outside of class but also allow some days for project work within the classroom. Being culturally responsive in my classroom is very important for my teaching style. It is important to recognize the social inequalities that do exist in the world. For my classroom, I need to teach equity and mutual respect for one another. A growth mindset is a belief that an individual can grow and develop through learning and effort. In a classroom setting, a growth mindset can be fostered by creating a positive learning environment where students feel supported and encouraged to take risks and learn from their mistakes. This can involve providing regular feedback and encouragement to students, and allowing them to try new things and challenge themselves. It can also involve teaching students about the brain and how it changes and adapts through learning so that they understand that their abilities are not fixed but can be developed over time. By promoting a growth mindset in the classroom, I can help students become more resilient and confident learners who are more likely to persevere in the face of challenges. I want every student to apply this growth mindset idea and use it for their success within school. For my classroom, I want my classroom to represent who I am as a teacher. My classroom should be open and inviting but also fit my personality. I think having your classroom as an educator is important for yourself and the students. It creates a comfortable environment that allows for growth and learning. As a teacher, I will continue to develop my philosophy of teaching and I will continue to learn as an educator. Through my teaching, I will be open to learning new strategies for an effective learning environment that will be able to benefit students for their future success. By being an educator I think I will be a teacher who allows for the growth of each student and I want my passion for the subject I teach to be reflected in the learning of the students. Being passionate about my teaching is so important because it shows that you care about knowledge and the ability to learn. The main idea of teaching is for growth and knowledge and that’s why I believe my philosophy is so important for students. This is why having an overarching teaching philosophy is so important, it affects every student that you teach. It shows what kind of an effect you have on the world and having a thorough philosophy is so beneficial to the world.
This is a thoughtful and well-crafted vision Shane. Think of this as the foundation for your educational journey. You can build on this set of principles as you progress through the program and out into the world of teaching.
